Montelago Resort, Lake Las Vegas – Review

My wife and I decided to spend Father’s day in Las Vegas with our 20 year old daughter. I thought my daughter would probably want her own room and I started to check prices. Our plan was to travel to Vegas Friday morning, spend Friday and Saturday night there, and check out Sunday after a nice family brunch. But when I started to check on the prices for accomodations in the newer Las Vegas Resorts that we were interested in visiting I truly experienced sticker shock. The rooms were much more expensive than I wanted to pay, especially since it was my intention to get two rooms. So I started going down the list of hotels and looking at the prices.

Nothing was jumping out at me. There were many hotels that were reasonably priced but ones I had already stayed at on previous vacations (I like staying at new places) and nothing with a real “Wow” factor. Then I came across the Aston Montelago Resort at Lake Las Vegas. It was incredibly priced, about half the cost of the resort hotels that I was looking at on the Strip. Of course it was approximately 24 miles from the Las Vegas Strip but for us that wasn’t a problem. We liked Lake Las Vegas. We often visited the lake when we were in Vegas.

Lake Las Vegas is an entirely different experience than the Las Vegas Strip. The Strip is loud, exciting, and full of glitz whereas Lake Las Vegas is quiet, quaint, and full of old world charm. It is very classy and low key surrounded by very luxurious and expensive homes. It’s the community where Celine Dione calls home when she is in Vegas. And here I was looking at hotel prices for Father’s Day weekend and the Montelago Resort prices in upscale Lake Las Vegas looked like a real deal. I immediately booked the room and even with the surprise “resort fee” it still seemed like a bargain.

I booked the two bedroom Viera Montelago suite and for just a few dollars more got a room with a furnished balcony and view of the lake. I showed promotional photos to the wife and kid and there were excited.

There was a king-size bed in the master bedroom, a queen-size bed in the second bedroom, and queen sofa bed in the living room. The suite also had dining area, balcony sun deck, fully equipped kitchenette, DVD/CD player, access (for a fee) to high speed Internet and a washer-dryer right in the suite. The master bathroom had the usual shower but also a separate oversized tub.

Amenities included: remote-controlled cable TV, individually controlled air conditioning and heating, iron & ironing board, alarm clock/radio, direct-dial telephones and voice mail.
